How these are counted

  • Uncontested: a race with no more candidates than seats. Some states, including Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma and California for many offices, declare a lone candidate elected and leave the race off the ballot, so many of their uncontested races aren't in our data and their share looks lower. Compare states with that in mind.
  • One major party: a partisan race with candidates from only one of the Democratic and Republican parties (or neither). Nebraska's and American Samoa's nonpartisan legislatures aren't counted here.
  • Races, not seats: a district electing several members counts once. Ballotpedia, which counts seats in 46 states, reports 34% of 2026 state legislative seats without major-party competition; on its basis our data gives 30%, the gap mostly being unopposed winners some states leave off the ballot.
  • Bonds: local questions that authorize bonds and state a dollar amount in their official text (the amount in the title when it gives one). Statewide bonds aren't included.
  • Coverage: local figures count only the counties where we have local races. Counts change as we add data; see What's new.
