What is a mosquito control district?
A mosquito control district is a special district that controls mosquitoes and the diseases they carry (such as West Nile virus and dengue) in one area. Under Chapter 388 of the Florida Statutes, many are run by a small elected board of commissioners.
What the board decides
The board sets the district's budget and tax rate and oversees its work: monitoring mosquito populations and disease, treating breeding sites, truck and aerial spraying, and public education.
Who serves, and how they're elected
Boards have three commissioners, or five if the board has voted to expand. They are elected in nonpartisan elections at the general election to 4-year terms and must be registered voters who live in the district. New commissioners take office in January.
How it's paid for
Mostly through a property tax on property in the district, set each year by the board along with its budget.
Questions to research before you vote
- Look at the district's budget and tax rate, and what spraying and monitoring it does in your area.
- Ask candidates how they'd weigh spraying against environmental concerns, and how they'd respond to a disease outbreak.
