What is a soil and water conservation district?

A soil and water conservation district works with landowners, farmers and state and federal agencies on soil erosion, water quality and conservation in its area, usually a county. It's run by five elected supervisors under Chapter 582 of the Florida Statutes.

What the supervisors do

Supervisors promote conservation of soil, water and natural resources: they work with landowners and agricultural producers, partner with agencies such as the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, and run education programs in schools and the community.

How the seats work

There are five supervisors, one for each numbered group or subdivision of the district. Elections are held every 2 years at the general election, with seats staggered so terms run 4 years. Every voter in the district can vote in each race. New supervisors take office in January.

The office is nonpartisan by law: candidates may not campaign or qualify based on party affiliation.

Questions to research before you vote

  • Look at what the district has been doing: its programs, partnerships and meeting minutes.
  • Ask candidates what they'd prioritize: water quality, farmland, urban conservation or education.
