How it works
- Governor, statewide offices and the Legislature use Louisiana's open primary: every candidate runs on one ballot, and a candidate with a majority wins outright; otherwise the top two meet on November 20.
- Since 2026, Louisiana holds closed party primaries only for some offices (U.S. Senate, Supreme Court, Public Service Commission and BESE).
- Online registration stays open until September 18 for the primary; for the general, registration closes October 20 (October 30 online).

More candidates
We'll list candidates here once they file with the Secretary of State or parish clerk of court, with each one's record, funding and, where research allows, their place on the left–right spectrum. Filing opens August 3, 2027 and closes August 5, 2027.
