The FBI's 2021 estimates fill the gap statistically and carry more uncertainty. The switch was to .
- Many crimes are never reported to police. The asks people directly, so it counts those too; in 2024, about 47.9% of violent victimizations were reported to police.
- Definitions change: the FBI broadened its definition of rape in 2013, so rape counts before and after aren't comparable. is the largest share of violent crime; is the largest share of property crime.
