Where these figures come from

  • Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 (5-year estimates): people, age, income, poverty, college degrees, home values, health insurance, housing costs, birthplace, veterans, race and Hispanic origin. Each is an estimate with a margin of error, wider for small counties.
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics, Local Area Unemployment Statistics: the unemployment rate for September 2026 (preliminary), not seasonally adjusted (the only way BLS publishes counties; states are shown the same way so they compare).
  • FBI: violent and property crimes reported to police per 100,000 residents. States: the FBI's estimates. Counties: the latest year every police agency in the county reported all 12 months, shown beside the figure, so years differ between counties. Sworn officers per 1,000 residents from the FBI's Law Enforcement Employees count.
  • Census of Governments 2022: local governments in each county: the county itself, cities and towns, townships, school districts and special districts.
  • Election results: each party's candidate's share of all votes cast, write-ins included. The presidential vote by state is the Federal Election Commission's compilation of each state's certified results (2004–2024; 2000 adds up the counties); by county, the MIT Election Data and Science Lab's County Presidential Election Returns 2000–2024, from official results (Alaska reports by state House district and Connecticut's figures are by its eight former counties, so Alaska's boroughs and Connecticut's planning regions have none). The 2024 U.S. House vote by district is from the same lab, on the districts as drawn in 2024. A district where only one party's candidate ran shows that candidate's share and none for the other. • Reading a comparison: these are published figures, shown as published. "Highest" and "lowest" describe the numbers, not how good a place is, and two figures that move together don't show that one causes the other.

How does "places like mine" work?
Pick a place and the figures to compare on. Each figure is put on the same scale (how far a place is from the average, in standard deviations; money and population on a log scale), and the places with the smallest overall difference are listed. It's a comparison of published figures, nothing more.
