Background
East Maine School District 63 says the $120.6 million, 25-year bond referendum would replace outdated building systems, improve safety and accessibility, relieve overcrowding and update classrooms.
According to the district, much of its plumbing, electrical and heating, cooling and air-quality equipment is more than 50 years old. It says several schools lack ADA-compliant routes, restrooms and elevators, and enrollment is projected to grow by more than 200 students.
The district says it reduced the plan's scope after community feedback. It estimates the annual tax impact at $314 on a home with a $350,000 fair market value, down from $423 under the original plan.
The district says its last successful referendum was in 2004, a limiting-rate increase for operations that did not fund major facility work.
