Getting on Wyoming's presidential primary ballot
| How | Wyoming has no state-run presidential primary and no state candidate filing for the presidential nomination. Delegates to the national conventions are chosen through each party's own county and state conventions: the state convention selects national convention delegates and alternates under party rules, and also nominates the party's presidential electors (W.S. 22-4-118(a)(i), (iv) and (v)(C)). Party conventions are held in even-numbered years. County convention delegates are the county central committee members unless party rules provide otherwise (W.S. 22-4-106, 22-4-107). The state chair calls the state convention by filing notice with the Secretary of State and each county clerk at least 20 days ahead (W.S. 22-4-116). How a presidential candidate takes part is set by party rules, not state law. |
|---|
| Where | No state filing. Contact the party's state organization; convention notices and party rules are filed with the Wyoming Secretary of State. |
|---|
| When | Set by party rules; the state convention is held in 2028. Electors nominated by a party's state convention are certified to the Secretary of State by the state party chair and secretary (W.S. 22-4-306), with certificates filed within 30 days after the state convention ends (W.S. 22-19-102(a)). |
|---|
| Fee | None; there is no state filing. |
|---|
| Petition | None; there is no state filing. |

Running as an independent in November
| How | File a petition for nomination with the Secretary of State on the Wyoming Petition for Nomination of President of the United States form. The petition must be approved by the filing office before circulation begins (W.S. 22-5-301(b)). Each signer must print their name, the date and their physical residential address; each signature counts only once (W.S. 22-5-305). Circulators sign a verification. The Secretary of State checks signatures against the official list of registered electors (W.S. 22-5-308). Per the Secretary of State's 2024 instructions, the presidential and vice-presidential candidates must also file sworn statements of their desire to be on the Wyoming ballot, along with the names of the three presidential electors. A candidate who lost a party primary for the same office cannot petition (W.S. 22-5-302), and a sponsoring group's name may not include the name of any recognized party (W.S. 22-5-303). |
|---|
| Where | Wyoming Secretary of State, Elections Division, Cheyenne (W.S. 22-5-306(a)). |
|---|
| When | Signatures may be gathered only during calendar year 2028 (W.S. 22-5-305(a)). The petition is due not less than 70 days before the general election (W.S. 22-5-307), which is August 29, 2028. The nominees for presidential elector are due by the same 70-day deadline (W.S. 22-19-102(b)). (expected: follows state law) |
|---|
| Fee | $750, the federal-office fee; the Secretary of State's 2024 instructions list "$750 – Candidates for federal offices." A petition filed without the fee is invalid (W.S. 22-5-306(b), 22-5-208(a)(iii)). |
|---|
| Petition | At least 2% of the total votes cast statewide for U.S. Representative at the last general election (W.S. 22-5-304(a)). For 2028 this is based on the 2026 U.S. House vote; for 2024 the Secretary of State set it at 3,891. |
|---|
| Also | Running mate: the Secretary of State's instructions require a sworn statement from the vice-presidential candidate. Electors: the 3 presidential elector nominees must be filed with the Secretary of State at least 70 days before the election (W.S. 22-19-102(b)). The Secretary of State's form and figures are the 2024 versions; 2028 versions are not yet posted. |
