Background

The Alaska Legislature passed Senate Bill 143, which became law August 11, 2026 and lets a municipality change school board terms by an ordinance approved by voters, according to the Kenai Peninsula Borough voter pamphlet.

Ordinance 2026-26 would bar a person who has served two consecutive full terms on the school board from being reelected until 180 days have passed; partial terms served by appointment or to fill a vacancy would not count, according to the pamphlet.

Terms counted toward the limit would start with members elected November 3, 2026, so 2032 would be the first election affected, according to the pamphlet.

The Borough Assembly approved the ballot language on September 1, 2026.

Put on the ballot by Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly, September 1, 2026 (Ordinance 2026-26 ballot language; vote tally not stated in the pamphlet).
