What it does
ROAD AND BRIDGE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT Do you favor or oppose Choctaw County levying an additional ad valorem tax of up to five (5) mills, beginning October 1, 2027, for no more than five (5) years, with all proceeds used solely for the projects in the Road and Bridge Plan, as advertised, to improve safety for the traveling public and promote economic development for industry and businesses, and authorizing the Commission to finance such projects through county warrants payable from those tax revenues? (ACT 2026-546)
A YES vote means
Choctaw County would levy an added property tax of up to 5 mills for up to five years starting October 1, 2027, used only for projects in its Road and Bridge Plan, and could finance them with county warrants repaid from the tax.

What it would cost
Up to 5 mills: $500 a year for every $100,000 of taxable value (a mill is $1 per $1,000). Taxable value is after exemptions such as homestead; your tax bill or property appraiser shows yours.

Background

House Bill 635 of the 2026 Regular Session, sponsored by Representative Easterbrook, authorized the Choctaw County Commission to propose this increase. According to the enrolled bill, it passed the House on April 1, 2026 and the Senate on April 7, 2026.

Under the bill, the commission may raise county ad valorem taxes by up to an additional five mills, with proceeds used only for county road and bridge improvement, and any increase is limited to five tax years.

The bill requires each proposal to state the levy amount, its start date, and the specific road or bridge projects it would fund with each project's projected completion date, and it lets the county issue warrants payable from the tax.

Put on the ballot by Choctaw County Commission, resolution after public hearing (date not stated), under HB635 (2026 Regular Session).
