Background

The amendment comes from SB213, sponsored by Sen. Woods. According to the enrolled bill, it passed the Senate on February 12, 2026 and the House on February 19, 2026.

Under the bill, a Lamar County homeowner 65 or older could claim a senior property tax exemption that freezes the assessed value of a single-family, owner-occupied principal residence lived in for at least five years before the first claim.

The property would still be subject to millage rate changes. Claims could begin October 1, 2027 and must be filed with the county revenue commissioner between October 1 and December 31.

Put on the ballot by Alabama Legislature (SB213, 2026 Regular Session).
