Background
The amendment comes from HB537, sponsored by Rep. Jackson. According to the enrolled bill, it passed the House on 10 Mar 26 and the Senate on 19 Mar 26.
Under the bill, a Monroe County homeowner 65 or older could claim a senior property tax exemption that freezes the assessed value of a single-family, owner-occupied principal residence lived in for at least 5 years before the first claim.
The property would still be subject to millage rate changes, and later additions would be taxed on their added value. Claims could be made beginning October 1, 2027, based on the property's value on October 1, 2026, and must be filed with the county revenue commissioner between October 1 and December 31.
