- What it does
- The continuation of the levy of 0.625% local sales and use Tax within the County to finance all or a portion of the costs of improvements to existing, roads, streets, and related structures, including particularly, without limitation, overpasses, underpasses, bridges and sidewalks, and any necessary land, easements, rights of way and related intersection improvements, drainage and traffic control devices and improvements therefor (collectively, the "Improvements"). If the question is approved, there will be a continuation of the existing levy within the County of 0.625% sales and use tax, the net collections of which after the State of Arkansas deducts its administrative charges and required rebates will be divided per capita among the County and the Municipalities within in the County pursuant to state law. The term of the sales and use tax levy shall be July 1, 2027, through June 30, 2032.
- A YES vote means
- Garland County's existing 0.625% sales and use tax would continue from July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2032 for road, street, bridge and sidewalk improvements, shared per person between the county and its cities.
- A NO vote means
- Garland County's 0.625% road sales and use tax would not continue.
- What it would cost
- 0.625% sales tax: $0.63 on a $100 taxable purchase. It would continue a tax already in place rather than add a new one.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
Garland County's current 0.625% road sales tax was levied by Ordinance O-21-36 with voter approval, and it expires June 30, 2027, according to Ordinance O-26-07.
If voters approve, the tax would continue from July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2032, and net collections would be split per capita between the county and the cities in it, according to the ordinance.
