Background
The Hacienda La Puente Unified School District Board of Education proposed this term limit by Resolution No. 2025/26-38, which states that a majority of the Board believes periodic leadership turnover promotes accountability and civic participation; the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors took up the related election services request as item 32 on July 7, 2026.
According to the resolution, state law (Education Code section 35107(c)) lets a school board propose term limits that apply only prospectively and take effect only if approved by a majority of voters.
Under the proposal, no person could serve more than two full four-year terms on the Board, regardless of trustee area; only full terms served on or after December 11, 2026 would count.
