Background
On August 17, 2026 the Norwich City Council unanimously adopted the ordinance appropriating $55,000,000 for a police headquarters at 300 Main Street, according to the council journal.
The ordinance says the project is expected to include a community room, training classrooms, an emergency operations center, a dispatch center, detention and evidence areas, a forensic lab, a sally port and parking.
A motion by Alderman Nystrom to postpone the referendum to the November 2, 2027 election failed 2–5; the council then voted 6–1, with Nystrom opposed, to send the ordinance to the November 3, 2026 ballot, according to the journal.
At the public hearing that night, supporters cited problems with the current station and downtown safety, while opponents called the cost too high and urged substations or renovating the existing station, according to the journal.
