Background

House Bill 1537 is a local act sponsored by Representatives Herring, Paris, Jones, Griffin and Washburn. It appears on the Governor's list of 2026 signed legislation.

The act says that if voters approve, the exemption applies to tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2027.

The act says the exemption replaces, rather than adds to, any other homestead exemption from Bibb County school district taxes, and it does not apply to state, county, municipal or independent school district taxes.

Under the act, homeowners must apply once to the Bibb County tax commissioner, and the exemption then renews automatically each year while they live in the home.

Put on the ballot by Georgia General Assembly, HB 1537 (local act, 2026 session), signed by the Governor.
