Hawaii County Charter Amendment Question 1 — County Auditor’s Power to Employ

Last updated Sat, Nov 7, 4:33 PM ET

Ballot measure · November 3, 2026

What it does
Shall the Hawai‘i County Charter be amended to allow the County Auditor to hire a deputy and exercise the same power, with respect to the employees within the Auditor’s office, as the department heads in the executive branch?
A YES vote means
The Hawai‘i County Auditor could hire a deputy and would have the same power over employees in the Auditor's office as executive branch department heads.
A NO vote means
The charter would not be changed to let the County Auditor hire a deputy or give the Auditor these powers over office employees.
Needed to pass
A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Hawaii adds a second test for constitutional amendments: YES must also equal at least half of all ballots cast in the election, so leaving it blank works against it.
Left–right lean
Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).

The YES and NO lines are SpectrumVote's plain-language reading of the official text above; the official text is what you vote on.
