Explained

Today

  • Idaho Falls School District 91 collects a voter-approved supplemental property tax levy of $8 million a year for two years, covering July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2027. Voters approved it in November 2024, 16,957 to 9,290 (about 65% yes).
  • Supplemental levies in Idaho are approved for a set number of years and pass with a simple majority of votes cast.

If it passes

  • A 'yes' vote authorizes a supplemental levy of $11 million a year for two years, July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2029, $3 million a year more than the current levy. It would follow the current levy when it expires.
  • The ballot lists the planned uses each year: about $8,480,000 for teacher and staff salaries and benefits, including maintenance staff; $1,100,000 for extracurricular activities such as debate, choir, drama, band, orchestra and sports; $900,000 for maintenance not covered by plant facility funds; and $520,000 for safety and security, including school resource officers, counselors, psychologists and nurses.
  • A 'no' vote means the district could not levy this amount. The current $8 million-a-year levy would still run through June 30, 2027, and the board could ask voters again.

Example

The official ballot estimates the average annual cost at $124 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value, based on current conditions. East Idaho News notes the estimate may not match the actual change on any individual tax bill. (source)

Who would notice

Property owners in Idaho Falls School District 91, who would pay the levy, and the district's students and employees, since most of the money goes to salaries and benefits.

How it got here

The district's Board of Trustees adopted the levy resolution on August 11, 2026, placing it on the November 3 ballot.

The current $8 million-a-year levy was placed on the 2024 ballot by a trustee resolution adopted August 14, 2024; this request is the next two-year levy, at a higher amount.
