Background

The Northfield Township Board of Trustees passed a resolution on May 12, 2026, placing this binding question on the November 3 ballot, along with two advisory questions, according to the township.

The township says the Road District is a separate unit of government with its own tax levy, budget and elected highway commissioner, and maintains about 23 miles of road in unincorporated parts of the 34-square-mile township; municipalities, Cook County and the state maintain other roads.

If the district is abolished, the township says it would take over road maintenance through a township road department, and services such as plowing, salting and drainage work would continue; it lists Naperville, Bloomingdale, Ela, Vernon, Hanover, Wheeling and Worth townships as having abolished their road districts.

The township says it provides this information for education and takes no position on the question.
