Background

According to the county's election notice, collection would begin April 1, 2027, under K.S.A. 12-187.

KCUR reported that the Unified Government Board of Commissioners voted 6–3 on August 20, 2026 to put the tax on the ballot, with Commissioners William Burns Jr., Chuck Stites and Andrew Kump opposed; Kump cited concern that sales taxes fall harder on lower-income families.

Interim County Administrator Alan Howze told KCUR the tax would raise about $12 million a year and would let the county run a year-round emergency homeless shelter; KCUR also reported the tax would last 10 years, a limit not stated in the ballot question.

The same night commissioners voted 6–4 to put a separate 3/8-cent sales tax for parks and infrastructure in Kansas City, Kansas on the ballot, KCUR reported.

Put on the ballot by Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas Board of Commissioners, 6–3, August 20, 2026 (per KCUR; official minutes are on CivicClerk and were not fetched).
