- What it does
- Shall the Town of Needham be allowed to exempt from the provisions of proposition two and one-half, so-called, the amounts required to pay for the bonds issued in order to provide architectural design, engineering, construction, demolition, and site work, including incidental costs, for a new Pollard Middle School on Harris Avenue?
- A YES vote means
- Needham could pay for bonds to design and build a new Pollard Middle School on Harris Avenue outside the limits of Proposition 2½.
- A NO vote means
- The bond payments for a new Pollard Middle School would not be exempted from Proposition 2½ limits.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
The Needham Select Board voted on August 3, 2026 to place the Pollard Middle School debt exclusion on the November 3 ballot, according to the town.
The town says the proposed project is a new grade 6-8 school on the current Harris Avenue site, built in two phases and designed for 1,335 students, with a total project cost of $325.4 million.
The town says part of the cost will be reimbursed by the Massachusetts School Building Authority, which accepted Needham into its Core Program in 2024.
If approved, the town says construction would begin in spring 2028, with grades 7 and 8 completed in summer 2030 and grade 6 by the end of 2031.
