Background

The City of Preston says its pool opened in 1957 and has reached the end of its useful life. It says the Minnesota Department of Health has identified code deficiencies that would eventually require it to close.

The city says the up-to-$6 million project would be funded by a 30-year general obligation bond, and that a capital campaign could reduce the amount ultimately borrowed.

According to the city, if the referendum fails the existing pool is expected to be permanently closed and demolished. If it passes, the City Council would still have to give final approval to the project and the bonding.

The city says its operating subsidy for the existing pool was $35,888 in 2025 and $36,558 in 2026.

Put on the ballot by Preston City Council, 2026 (resolution date and vote not found in an online official record).
