What local offices are elected in Montana?
Each Montana county elects a board of three county commissioners (nominated by district, elected countywide, for six-year staggered terms) and its county officers for four-year terms: the clerk and recorder, treasurer, sheriff, coroner, county attorney, superintendent of schools, public administrator and, in some counties, an assessor, auditor and surveyor, often combined into one office in smaller counties; the clerk of the district court is elected in presidential years. County races are partisan. The consolidated city-counties of Butte-Silver Bow and Anaconda-Deer Lodge elect a chief executive and commissioners by district on a nonpartisan ballot. Justices of the peace, school trustees and city councils are elected on nonpartisan ballots.
