Background
This is an advisory referendum: under N.C. Gen. Stat. 105-535 through 538, the Bladen County Board of Commissioners may levy the quarter-cent tax only if a majority of voters in the referendum vote for it, according to a county resolution.
Following its June 15, 2026 meeting, the board submitted a resolution asking the Bladen County Board of Elections to hold the referendum during the November 2026 general election, the resolution states.
In a resolution adopted August 17, 2026, the board said that if the tax is approved and levied, it intends to dedicate the net proceeds first to a centrally located multi-use sports and event center, including its debt, and afterward to other publicly identified capital projects.
WECT reported that no specific plan or location for the sports center has been decided.
