Background
On April 20, 2026, the Columbus County Board of Commissioners voted 6-1 to approve a resolution, requested by Commissioner Lavern Coleman, placing malt beverage, unfortified wine and mixed beverage questions on the November 3, 2026 ballot; Commissioner Bullard voted no, according to the meeting minutes.
Residents spoke both for and against placing the questions on the ballot during public comment at that meeting, and a speaker supporting the referendum said there had not been one in the county since approximately 2003, according to the minutes.
The interim county attorney told the board that 'community theatre' in the statutory ballot wording does not mean a movie theater, that the county currently has no hotels to which the hotel provision would apply, and that each of the three alcohol questions is voted on separately.
