Background
On June 1, 2026, the Scotland County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution authorizing a referendum on an optional quarter-percent sales tax for the November 2026 ballot, according to the meeting minutes.
According to the minutes, County Manager April Snead said the board had discussed the item at its previous meeting, and Chairman Frizzell said the board was putting the quarter-percent sales tax back on the ballot.
The referendum is advisory: under N.C. Gen. Stat. 105-537, if a majority votes for the tax, the board of commissioners may levy it by resolution after 10 days' public notice.
