Background
On June 1, 2026, the Mount Olive Board of Commissioners enacted an ordinance amending the town charter to create four-year staggered terms and adopted a resolution calling this referendum, because under N.C. Gen. Stat. 160A-102 the ordinance takes effect only if voters approve it, according to the town's resolution.
The News-Argus reported the board approved the ordinance and referendum resolution 4-1, with Commissioner Gena Messer-Knode voting no.
Under the resolution, in 2027 the mayor would be elected to a two-year term and the top three commissioner candidates to four-year terms with the next two to two-year terms; from 2029 the mayor and two commissioners, and from 2031 three commissioners, would be elected every four years.
