Background

On June 1, 2026, the Yadkin County Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 to adopt a resolution asking the Board of Elections to hold this advisory referendum, according to the meeting minutes.

County Manager Silverman told the board the tax would generate an estimated $980,000 a year, equivalent to 2.5 cents on the property tax rate, and that Yadkin County voters had rejected the quarter-cent tax four previous times, according to the minutes.

The board also voted 5-0 for a resolution stating that, if the tax is approved, it will work toward funding the three priorities residents ranked highest in a county survey of 630 responses: the school system, economic development and fire departments.

According to that resolution, the tax would not apply to groceries, gasoline, prescription medications and some agricultural products.

Put on the ballot by Yadkin County Board of Commissioners, 5-0, June 1, 2026.
