Background

According to the interpretive statement on the county sample ballot, the Township would create a Length of Service Award Program for qualifying volunteer firefighters under N.J.S.A. 40A:14-183.

Each volunteer who performs the service required by ordinance would have up to $1,150 a year deposited into an account. The Township expects the program to cost $35,000 a year, budgeted annually.

The statement says the Township's plan lets volunteers earn credit for up to ten prior years of service, provided they remain active.
