Background

According to the Borough's informational page, Collingswood does not currently allow alcohol sales, and under New Jersey law only voters can change that. The question reached the ballot through a resident petition signed by at least 15% of those who voted in the last State Assembly election.

The Borough says that if the measure passes, up to four restaurant and bar licenses could be issued, since state law allows one per 3,000 residents and Collingswood has about 14,186. No license would be issued until the Borough adopts local rules and an award process, typically a public bid.

The Borough says it could limit the number and type of licenses, their locations through zoning, and hours of sale. If the measure fails, sales stay prohibited and the same question cannot return to the ballot for five years.

Put on the ballot by Resident petition (at least 15% of last State Assembly election voters); referendum set by the Borough of Collingswood.
