Background

According to Ordinance 026-2026, this amendment was proposed by Maumee's Charter Review Advisory Commission, which is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by Council, and is one of three charter amendments the ordinance submits to voters as separate ballot questions.

In the marked-up text attached to the ordinance, the new language in Article VIII says nominating petitions and statements of candidacy are to be substantially in the form prescribed by the Ohio Secretary of State, and that a non-partisan primary is to be conducted by the election authorities on dates prescribed by Ohio law, which laws apply to all primary elections.

Council minutes for June 15, 2026, record a 7–0 roll call vote approving the ordinance's second reading; the July 13, 2026, agenda lists the ordinance for final approval. Under the Ohio Constitution, as quoted in the ordinance, a charter amendment becomes part of the charter if a majority of voters approve it.

Put on the ballot by Maumee City Council, on the recommendation of the Charter Review Advisory Commission; second reading approved 7–0 on June 15, 2026, and listed for final approval July 13, 2026 (Ordinance 026-2026).
