Background
The Giles County Board of Supervisors adopted the referendum resolution on August 5, 2026 by a 5-0 vote, according to the board's minutes.
County Administrator Chris McKlarney said Davenport Financial estimated the tax could raise about $1.76 million a year, though local staff considered $1.5 million to $1.7 million more realistic. He said staff conservatively estimate at least 30% of the revenue would come from non-residents, the minutes say.
Supervisor Richard McCoy noted the county is undertaking about $63 million in school construction and said the tax would be limited to construction and renovation, not salaries or operations, according to the minutes.
The county attorney said that if voters approve, the board would hold a public hearing before deciding whether to enact the tax, the minutes say.
