Background
The Nottoway County Board of Supervisors adopted the referendum resolution on July 30, 2026, on a motion by Vice Chairman Toth seconded by Supervisor Ingram. The minutes record no nays, with Supervisor Roark absent.
The county attorney told the board the authority came from the 2026 budget bill, signed June 29, 2026, which amended Virginia Code §58.1-605.1. She said that if voters approve, the board must hold a public hearing and adopt an ordinance, and the tax would take effect 120 days after adoption.
According to the minutes, the resolution sets both a bond and loan repayment deadline and a 20-year expiration date of July 30, 2046. The county attorney said food, groceries, medicine and fuel would not be subject to the tax.
