- What it does
- BONDS TO REPLACE DETERIORATING WENATCHEE HIGH SCHOOL AND IMPROVE SCHOOL AIR QUALITY DISTRICTWIDE The Board of Directors of Wenatchee School District No. 246 adopted Resolution No. 03-26, concerning safe, modern facilities to enhance learning and student health/safety. This proposition would authorize the District to: construct a new Wenatchee High School to replace existing classrooms/portables and expand career/technical education spaces (adding classrooms to reduce overcrowding, controlled entries for safety/security); upgrade aging HVAC at seven schools for clean air (reducing wildfire smoke) and safe temperatures; issue $ 275,000,000 of general obligation bonds maturing within 20 years; and levy annual excess property taxes to repay the bonds, all as provided in Resolution No. 03-26. Should this proposition be:
- A YES vote means
- Wenatchee School District could issue $275,000,000 in bonds, maturing within 20 years and repaid with property taxes, to build a new Wenatchee High School and upgrade HVAC at seven schools.
- A NO vote means
- Wenatchee School District would not issue these $275,000,000 in bonds, and the related property tax would not be levied.
- Needed to pass
- A 60% supermajority: at least 60 out of every 100 YES and NO votes must be YES, so a measure can get a majority and still fail.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
Wenatchee School District says the $275 million bond would replace much of Wenatchee High School on its current campus while keeping and renovating the auditorium, gyms, pool, locker rooms and band classrooms. It would also put new HVAC systems in four elementary schools and all three middle schools.
According to the district, the high school serves more than 1,900 students and the current building is 54 years old. The proposal came from three years of facility assessments and a Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee recommendation.
The district says approval would also qualify it for an estimated $83 million from the state School Construction Assistance Program. It puts the bond tax rate at $1.46 per $1,000 of assessed value and says the overall local rate would stay stable as earlier bond debt is retired.
