Results: the official election results site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- The Pierce County Charter Review Commission proposed an amendment to Section 2.35 of the Pierce County Charter concerning meetings of the County Council. If approved, this amendment will require the County Council to meet at least 45 times each year and require all Council meetings that require public comment to have an option for remote attendance and public comment. Should this proposed Charter amendment be:
- A YES vote means
- The Pierce County Council would have to meet at least 45 times a year, and all meetings with public comment would need a remote attendance and comment option.
- A NO vote means
- Pierce County's charter would not add these Council meeting requirements.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Explained
Today
- Section 2.35 of the Pierce County Charter says: "The Council shall meet at least once in each of fifty weeks during the calendar year."
- The Charter does not mention remote attendance or remote public comment at Council meetings.
If it passes
- YES: The Council would have to meet at least 45 times during the calendar year, replacing the once-a-week-in-50-weeks rule.
- YES: Every Council meeting where public comment is required by law or rule would have to offer an option for remote attendance and remote public comment.
- NO: The rule to meet at least once in each of 50 weeks stays, and the Charter keeps no remote-participation requirement.
Example
Under the current rule, no more than two weeks of a year can pass without a Council meeting. Under the amendment, the Council would need at least 45 meetings in the year, with no weekly requirement.
Who would notice
Residents who attend or comment at County Council meetings, and the Council itself. It does not change any tax.
How it got here
The 2026 Pierce County Charter Review Commission proposed it and sent it directly to the ballot as one of seven amendments; it sent three other proposals to the County Council. The pamphlet statement for says no commissioner voted against sending it.
What each side says
Supporters
- "Current Charter language requires the Council to meet at least once during 50 weeks of each calendar year. The amendment instead requires at least 45 meetings each year. This replaces a rigid scheduling rule with a more practical standard while maintaining regular Council meetings."
- "By placing this requirement in the Charter, it helps ensure residents who cannot attend meetings in person can still participate."
Opponents
- No statement against this amendment was submitted for the voters' pamphlet.
