Background

In April 2026 voters rejected a proposal for $3.15 million a year for three years, and the district's previous operational referendum expired in June, according to the district's referendum site.

The district says it balanced the 2026-27 budget by cutting 13 positions, six of them teaching positions, freezing pay for all employees and reducing high school course offerings.

The district projects its mill rate will fall from $6.99 in 2025-26 to $6.35 this year, then to $6.07 in 2027-28 and $5.61 in 2028-29, even if the referendum passes.

The district says the new request starts in the current 2026-27 school year and would end after 2028-29.

Put on the ballot by Southern Door County School District Board of Education (adoption date and vote not posted on the district's referendum site).
