Background

Ordinance Serial No. 26-072, sponsored by Assemblymember Nowers, was defeated by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly on June 16, 2026, then adopted on reconsideration July 21, 2026; a motion to rescind failed August 4, according to the ordinance's legislative history.

The ordinance would exempt the first $75,000 of assessed value of qualifying owner-occupied homes from borough property tax and adopt a 1% areawide sales tax.

Under the ordinance, only the first $1,000 of the price in each transaction would be subject to the sales tax.

Put on the ballot by Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly, adopted on reconsideration July 21, 2026 (Ord. Serial No. 26-072; vote not stated).
