Background

Flagstaff Unified School District says Proposition 409 would create a new District Additional Assistance (capital) override of about $2.5 million a year for seven fiscal years. Its proposed annual plan is $1 million for curriculum materials, $1 million for classroom technology and $500,000 for facility improvements, furniture and equipment.

The district says the money cannot be used for salaries or general operating costs. It estimates the rate at $0.13 per $100 of net assessed value, or about $39 a year for a home with a $300,000 limited property value.

The district says it is evaluating cuts to other district tax levies that could help offset the cost of Proposition 409, which would be a new tax. A separate question, Proposition 407, would continue the existing 15% M&O override.
