Explained
Today
- Chandler's City Charter says the City Council elects a vice-mayor from among its members within 31 days after taking office.
- The vice-mayor acts as mayor when the mayor is temporarily absent or disabled.
If it passes
- The Council would elect the vice-mayor at its first regular meeting in January of each year, instead of within 31 days after taking office.
- Nothing else about the vice-mayor's role changes.
Who would notice
The Chandler City Council and how it picks its vice-mayor. It does not change any tax or city service.
How it got here
In June 2025 the City Council created a nine-member City Charter Amendment Resident Advisory Committee to review the charter. The Council picked four of its recommendations and on April 23, 2026 approved Resolution No. 6001, sending this one to voters. The city says the goal is a clear, predictable annual timeline.
In the news
Background
The current charter says the council elects a vice-mayor from among its members within 31 days after taking office; Proposition 431 would have the council elect the vice-mayor at its first regular meeting in January of each year.
According to Resolution No. 6001, the City Council formed a City Charter Amendment Resident Advisory Committee by Ordinance 5132 on June 12, 2025; the committee presented its recommendations at a February 2, 2026 work session and the council considered them again on April 6, 2026.
The resolution says the amendment is meant to clarify ambiguities in the charter about selecting the vice-mayor, as the committee recommended. The council adopted it in April 2026; the posted copy leaves the day blank. No arguments for or against were filed.
