Background
According to the Board of Supervisors' resolution, county voters first approved Measure I in November 1989 and extended it in November 2004; the half-cent transportation sales tax is set to expire in 2040.
County Counsel's impartial analysis says a two-thirds 'yes' vote would let the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority keep levying the existing tax from April 1, 2040 until repealed by voters, for streets, roads, highways, freeways, public transit, and transportation technologies, with some revenue required to be spent in the subarea where it is raised.
The analysis says the voter-approved Transportation Expenditure Plan could be revised starting in 2050 and at least every ten years after, the Independent Taxpayer Oversight Committee created in 2004 would continue, and administration is capped at 1% of net revenue.
The Authority adopted Ordinance No. 26-1 on June 3, 2026 asking for the election, and the Board of Supervisors called it on June 23, 2026 by a 5-0 vote.
