Background

This question was placed on the ballot by citizen initiative petition: Colorado law allows a petition signed by at least 8% of the county's votes for Secretary of State at the last general election to put a five-member board question to voters; based on 2022 results, 13,064 signatures were required, according to Board of County Commissioners Resolution 2026-056.

According to the resolution, the petition was filed by the July 14, 2026 deadline, the County Clerk issued a statement of sufficiency on August 5, 2026, and the Board then fixed and certified the ballot titles in the form petitioned for; the cost of the election is paid from the county general fund.

A companion question on the same ballot asks voters to choose, if the board is expanded, between five commissioners elected by district only or three elected by district plus two elected countywide.

Put on the ballot by Citizen initiative petition (found sufficient August 5, 2026); ballot titles certified by the Boulder County Board of Commissioners, 3-0, August 25, 2026 (Resolution 2026-056).
