Background
The question came to Peoria Township's April 14, 2026 annual town meeting by citizen petition, and the township's agenda lists it as an item for the electors to decide whether to put it on the November 3, 2026 ballot.
WCBU reported that the electors at the meeting voted 69-27 to place the nonbinding question on the ballot after nearly an hour of discussion with about 20 speakers.
WCBU also reported that some electors objected that "Congressional members" refers to U.S. representatives, who do not make state law. The township attorney said the wording had to stay as written on the petition and could not be amended.
