De Soto Parish — Fire Protection District 5 Proposition (Millage Renewal)
Ballot measure · November 3, 2026 · Only voters in this district
Results: the official election results site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- Shall Fire Protection District 5 of the Parish of DeSoto, State of Louisiana (the "District"), continue to levy a special tax of 10 mills (the "Tax") on property subject to taxation in the District (an estimated $484,400 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the Tax for an entire year), for a period of 10 years, beginning with the year 2028 and ending with the year 2037, for the purpose of acquiring, constructing, improving, maintaining and operating fire protection and emergency medical equipment and facilities in the District, including purchasing fire trucks and other fire fighting and emergency equipment and paying the cost of obtaining water for fire protection purposes, provided that a portion of the Tax proceeds is required to be contributed to state and statewide retirement systems as provided in R.S. 11:82?
- A YES vote means
- DeSoto Fire Protection District 5 would continue its 10-mill property tax from 2028 through 2037 for fire and emergency medical equipment, facilities and water, with part going to state retirement systems.
- A NO vote means
- The district would not continue the 10-mill property tax for 2028 through 2037.
- What it would cost
- 10 mills (estimated) for 10 years: $1,000 a year for every $100,000 of taxable value (a mill is $1 per $1,000). Louisiana assesses homes at 10% of market value, so that's about $100 per $100,000 of market value, before the homestead exemption. Taxable value is after exemptions such as homestead; your tax bill or property appraiser shows yours. It would continue a tax already in place rather than add a new one.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
