Jefferson Davis Parish — Parishwide Proposition (Sales Tax Extension & Rededication)

Last updated Sat, Nov 7, 4:33 PM ET

Ballot measure · November 3, 2026

What it does
Shall the Parish of Jefferson Davis, State of Louisiana (the "Parish"), be authorized to continue to levy and collect a 1/2% sales and use tax (the "Tax") in accordance with Louisiana law (an estimated $3,300,000 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the Tax for an entire year), for a period of 10 years from and after July 1, 2034, with the proceeds of the Tax hereafter collected to be used for the purposes of acquiring, constructing, improving, operating, and maintaining jail facilities and animal shelter facilities for the Parish, and for providing additional support for animal control operations in the Parish, provided that no more than 10% of the proceeds of the Tax received in any year may be used for animal shelter or animal control purposes?
A YES vote means
Jefferson Davis Parish would continue a 1/2% sales and use tax for 10 years after July 1, 2034, for jail and animal shelter facilities and animal control, with no more than 10% a year for animal purposes.
A NO vote means
The parish would not continue the 1/2% sales and use tax for the 10 years after July 1, 2034.
What it would cost
0.5% sales tax for 10 years: $0.50 on a $100 taxable purchase. It would continue a tax already in place rather than add a new one.
Needed to pass
A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
Left–right lean
Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).

Background

According to the proposition text filed with the Louisiana Secretary of State, the parish would continue its existing 1/2% sales and use tax, estimated at $3,300,000 a year, for 10 years from July 1, 2034, for jail facilities and animal shelter facilities, with no more than 10% of annual proceeds usable for animal shelter or animal control purposes.

KPLC reported that a similar measure to direct jail tax funds to the parish's new animal shelter failed by 15 votes in the parish's previous election, and that the revised version caps the share at 10 percent, which officials put at about $330,000 a year; the outlet reported that officials describe it as not a new tax.

KPLC reported that the jail tax surplus currently goes to the Sheriff's Office.

Put on the ballot by Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury (State Bond Commission agenda June 18, 2026, item L26-176); resolution date and vote not found online.
