Results: the official election results site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- Shall the City of Gretna, Parish of Jefferson, State of Louisiana (the "City") be authorized to levy and collect a special tax of four (4.00) mills (an estimated $683,939.47 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the special tax for an entire year) on all property subject to taxation in the City of Gretna; that being the same area contained within voting precincts G-001 through G-011, City of Gretna; including voting precincts G-012 and G-013 Parts, Annexed Timberlane Subdivision; for a period of ten (10) years, beginning with the year 2028, and ending with the year 2037, for the object and purpose of providing ambulance service, within said city; a work of permanent public improvement, title to which shall be in the public?
- A YES vote means
- Gretna would levy a 4-mill property tax from 2028 through 2037 to provide ambulance service in the city.
- A NO vote means
- Gretna would not levy this 4-mill property tax for ambulance service.
- What it would cost
- 4 mills (estimated) for 10 years: $400 a year for every $100,000 of taxable value (a mill is $1 per $1,000). Louisiana assesses homes at 10% of market value, so that's about $40 per $100,000 of market value, before the homestead exemption. Taxable value is after exemptions such as homestead; your tax bill or property appraiser shows yours.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
The City of Gretna sought Louisiana State Bond Commission approval to hold this election; it was item L26-213 on the Commission's June 18, 2026 agenda, which listed three city millages: 4.0 mills for ambulance service, 8.0 mills for police manpower, and 8.5 mills for fire protection.
According to the proposition text, the 4.0-mill ambulance tax would run 10 years, 2028-2037, and is estimated to raise $683,939.47 a year.
