Morehouse Parish — Ward Two Cemetery Tax Proposition (Millage)

Last updated Sat, Nov 7, 4:33 PM ET

Ballot measure · November 3, 2026 · Only voters in this district

What it does
Shall the Parish of Morehouse, State of Louisiana (the "Parish"), under the authority of La. R.S. 33:2740.45, and other constitutional and statutory authority, levy and collect a special ad valorem tax of two (2) mills, on all the property subject to taxation in Ward Two of the Parish (an estimated $35,000 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the tax for one entire year) for a period of ten (10) years, beginning with the year 2027 and ending with the year 2036, inclusive, for the acquisition, improvement, maintenance and upkeep of public cemeteries in Ward Two of the Parish, with the initial levy of such tax for the year 2027 to be made in lieu of the final authorized levy of a similar tax that was approved at an election held on April 29, 2017?
A YES vote means
Morehouse Parish would levy a 2-mill property tax in Ward Two from 2027 through 2036 for public cemeteries there, with the 2027 levy replacing the final year of a similar tax approved in 2017.
A NO vote means
The parish would not levy this 2-mill Ward Two cemetery tax for 2027 through 2036.
What it would cost
2 mills (estimated) for 10 years: $200 a year for every $100,000 of taxable value (a mill is $1 per $1,000). Louisiana assesses homes at 10% of market value, so that's about $20 per $100,000 of market value, before the homestead exemption. Taxable value is after exemptions such as homestead; your tax bill or property appraiser shows yours.
Needed to pass
A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
Left–right lean
Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).

The YES and NO lines are SpectrumVote's plain-language reading of the official text above; the official text is what you vote on.

Background

The tax is estimated to raise $35,000 a year for 2027–2036 for acquiring, improving and maintaining public cemeteries in Ward Two.
