St. Charles Parish — Parishwide Proposition No. 1 of 2 (Recreation Millage Renewal)
Ballot measure · November 3, 2026
Results: the official election results site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- Shall the Parish of St. Charles, State of Louisiana (the "Parish"), be authorized to continue to levy a 2.68 mills tax on all property subject to taxation in the Parish (an estimated $6,800,000 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the tax for an entire year), for a period of 10 years, beginning with the year 2028 and ending with the year 2037, for the purpose of constructing, improving, maintaining and operating recreation facilities and programs in the Parish?
- A YES vote means
- St. Charles Parish would continue a 2.68-mill property tax from 2028 through 2037 for recreation facilities and programs.
- A NO vote means
- The parish would not continue the 2.68-mill recreation tax for 2028 through 2037.
- What it would cost
- 2.68 mills (estimated) for 10 years: $268 a year for every $100,000 of taxable value (a mill is $1 per $1,000). Louisiana assesses homes at 10% of market value, so that's about $26.80 per $100,000 of market value, before the homestead exemption. Taxable value is after exemptions such as homestead; your tax bill or property appraiser shows yours. It would continue a tax already in place rather than add a new one.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
This tax election was called by the St. Charles Parish Council. In Louisiana, a local tax election must be approved by the State Bond Commission; the Commission's May 21, 2026 agenda lists two parishwide St. Charles taxes for the November 3, 2026 election: 2.68 mills for 10 years (2028–2037) for recreation facilities and programs, and 1.25 mills for 10 years (2027–2036) for programs for the elderly through the St. Charles Council on Aging (item L26-146).
The ballot describes the recreation tax as a continuation of an existing levy and estimates it would raise $6,800,000 a year.
