Results: the official election results site. Counts are unofficial until certified.
- What it does
- Shall Hospital Service District No. 3 of the Parish of Vermilion, State of Louisiana (the "District"), be authorized to continue to levy a tax of 8.29 mills on all the property subject to taxation in the District (an estimated $212,150 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the tax for an entire year), for a period of 10 years, beginning with the year 2027 and ending with the year 2036, for the purpose of improving and maintaining the buildings and capital facilities of the District and acquiring furnishings and equipment therefor?
- A YES vote means
- Vermilion Hospital Service District No. 3 would continue its 8.29-mill property tax from 2027 through 2036 to improve and maintain its buildings and facilities and buy furnishings and equipment.
- A NO vote means
- The district would not continue the 8.29-mill property tax for 2027 through 2036.
- What it would cost
- 8.29 mills (estimated) for 10 years: $829 a year for every $100,000 of taxable value (a mill is $1 per $1,000). Louisiana assesses homes at 10% of market value, so that's about $82.90 per $100,000 of market value, before the homestead exemption. Taxable value is after exemptions such as homestead; your tax bill or property appraiser shows yours. It would continue a tax already in place rather than add a new one.
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
According to the district's audited financial statements (fiscal years ended March 31, 2023 and 2022), Hospital Service District No. 3 was created by the Vermilion Parish Police Jury in 1988, covers Ward No. 8 of Vermilion Parish, and operates the 66-bed Gueydan Memorial Guest Home nursing home in Gueydan.
The audit states that voters approved a 10-year, 7-mill property tax in 2006 for improving and maintaining the district's buildings and acquiring furnishings and equipment, and renewed it at 8.29 mills in 2016 for the same purpose; ad valorem taxes provided about 3.97% of the district's financial support in 2023.
The State Bond Commission's June 18, 2026 agenda lists the district's request (item L26-161) to hold this election on renewing the 8.29-mill tax for 10 years, 2027–2036.
