- What it does
- Should voters Approve the updated City Charter?
- Needed to pass
- A simple majority: more than half of the YES and NO votes on this measure must be YES. Leaving it blank doesn't count either way.
- Left–right lean
- Not a left–right issue: a procedural or local question that liberals and conservatives don't typically split on (AI read of the official ballot summary).
Background
According to the explanatory statement in the Marion County voters' pamphlet, Aurora's charter has not been amended since 1985, and the city currently has a 'strong mayor' government in which the elected Mayor runs day-to-day operations and prepares the budget.
The updated charter would switch Aurora to a council-manager form on January 1, 2027. A professional City Manager appointed by the Council would run operations and propose the budget, while the Mayor would preside over Council and vote.
The statement says City Council placed the measure on the ballot following Charter Review Committee recommendations. No arguments for or against were filed.
