Background
According to the city's notice of measure election, the Banks City Council recommended this measure to renew the current local option tax of $2.50 per $1,000 of assessed value, in place since 2022, for five years beginning in tax year 2027.
The city's explanatory statement says the levy funds a contract with the Washington County Sheriff, in place since 2006, for two full-time dedicated deputies working a combined 80 hours a week in Banks; the current contract expires June 30, 2027.
The statement says that if the levy fails, Banks would have law enforcement response only for high-priority emergency calls, from an officer shared with the west side of the county.
The city estimates the cost at $250 a year for a home assessed at $100,000.
